Why does Dave always see love as transactional? There is no way that I could ever cut off one of my children. I would make absolutely clear that if they ever changed their minds that I would welcome them back with open arms and try to convey how heartbroken I was that they weren't a part of my life. The act of giving does not involve judgement. You either give or you don't. I don't believe that you have the right to approve or disapprove of someone's behaviour and require them to behave in a certain way to gain the 'reward' of your love or gift. You have to honor your heart and this woman sounds very transactional to me. Her daughters would have always felt it.

My concern, and it may be a weak perspective, is that it could be a Bad Idea to tell management that you and your colleagues have been comparing pay rates. In some organizations that is a firing offense. And even if there is no formal rule about that, it's important to consider whether you're effectively throwing those (brand new) colleagues under the bus by crying to management about relative salary rates. Which if so, is not how to make friends and influence people.
